The Future of Packaged Media Summit
February 3-4, 2009
Hilton Los Angeles
Universal City, California

Hastings Entertainment's John Marmaduke and Netflix' Ted Sarandos  To Keynote "The Future of Packaged Media '09"

They will speak to the continuing importance of packaged entertainment

PRINCETON, NJ, USA – 5 January 2009 Entertainment retailing leaders John H. Marmaduke, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hastings Entertainment, Inc., and Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix, Inc., will present keynote addresses at “The Future of Packaged Media ’09,” event organizers announced today. The two-day summit, which will be presented February 3-4, 2009 at the Hilton Los Angeles in Universal City, CA, will feature high-level executives from across the packaged media supply chain addressing the content, technology, and marketing challenges for packaged entertainment in the coming years. In addition, the event will feature a showcase where participating companies will be able to exhibit their products and services.

Marmaduke will speak on “How a Leading Entertainment Specialist Is Maintaining Its Commitment to, and Maximizing Sales and Rentals of, Packaged Entertainment.” Hastings Entertainment, Inc. founded in 1968, is a leading multimedia entertainment retailer that combines the sale of new and used CDs, books, videos, and video games, as well as boutique merchandise, with the rental of videos and video games in a superstore format. It currently operates 153 superstores, averaging approximately 20,000 square feet, primarily in medium-sized markets throughout the United States. Hastings Entertainment also offers an e-commerce Internet web site, www.gohastings.com, that makes available to customers new and used entertainment products and unique, contemporary gifts and toys. Marmaduke has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company since July 1976 and as Chairman of the Board since October 1993.

The topic of Sarandos’ keynote is “The Leading Online Video Rental Service Speaks to Its Continuing Support for DVD and the Importance of Blu-ray Discs to Our Industry’s Future.” Netflix, Inc. is the world's largest online movie rental service, with more than eight million subscribers. The company's appeal and success are built on providing the most expansive selection of DVDs, an easy way to choose movies and fast, free delivery. Ted Sarandos has led content acquisition for Netflix since 2000. During his tenure, the Netflix library has increased from 2,000 to 100,000 titles on DVD and more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes available to watch instantly on the personal computer and the TV.

Ted Sarandos will offer his remarks and analysis in the morning of Opening Day, February 3, 2009 and John Marmaduke will deliver his keynote address mid-morning on February 4, 2009.

“The Future of Packaged Media ’09” is being produced by the Content Delivery and Storage Association (CDSA), Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA), and MEDIA-TECH Association (MTA). Additional information about the summit, including the current list of speakers and registration information, is available at www.FuturePackagedMedia.com

EMA Teams Up with CDSA and MEDIA-TECH To Coproduce "The Future of Packaged Media '09"

February event will focus on maintaining vitality of packaged entertainment

PRINCETON, NJ, USA – 3 December 2008 The Content Delivery and Storage Association (CDSA) and MEDIA-TECH Association (MTA) today welcomed the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) as a coproducer with them of “The Future of Packaged Media ‘09,” which will be presented February 3-4, 2009 at the Hilton Los Angeles in Universal City, CA. The two-day summit will feature high-level executives from across the packaged media supply chain addressing the content, technology, and marketing challenges for packaged entertainment in the coming years. In addition, the event will feature a showcase where participating companies will be able to exhibit their products and services.

Specific topics to be addressed at the summit include: the future of brick and mortar retailers; whether entertainment media are recession-proof; green packaging; consumer attitudes towards packaged media; the marketing of Blu-ray Discs; case studies in media manufacturing operations; and the impact of the credit crunch.

“Digital distribution certainly will be a significant part of the entertainment industry in the future, but our predictions are that packaged media will continue to dominate the home video sector until 2015 at least,” noted Bo Andersen, President and CEO of EMA. “We are pleased that, as the trade association for the retailing of DVDs and video games, we can help bring the perspectives of the retail sector to this important conversation on how to maximize the sales and profitability of packaged entertainment over the next decade.”

“We are fortunate to have the support of the Entertainment Merchants Association, the trade association for the retailers of DVDs and video games, for the summit,” commented Charles Van Horn, CDSA President. “Retailers are vital to the future of packaged media and are therefore integral to the success of any packaged media event. Without retailers, manufacturers would be hard-pressed to bring their products to market. The retail segment of the packaged media industry provides the connection with the consumer, a connection to the ultimate decider of the success of any format.”

“We are delighted that this has become a three-way event to include the CDSA, with its strong content owner and replicator contacts, the EMA, with the force of the retailers, and the MTA, with its influence of the suppliers of equipment and material manufactures,” said Bryan Ekus, managing director of the MEDIA-TECH Association. “By coming together, these three associations can leverage their particular strengths to provide the best possible event for everyone from content owners to media manufacturers, packaging companies, and retailers.”

Associations Join Forces to Create New Packaged Media Event

PRINCETON, NJ, USA – 17 September 2008 The two leading media creation, storage, manufacturing, and distribution industry associations: the Content Delivery and Storage Association (CDSA) and MEDIA-TECH Association (MTA) have announced that they are to join forces to provide a new industry event early next year.

The Future of Packaged Entertainment Summit, jointly produced by MTA and CDSA, will take place February 3 to 4 at the Universal Hilton in Hollywood. The two-day program will address technology challenges on the first day and content and marketing challenges on the second. In addition, the event will feature a Showcase so supporting companies will be able to exhibit their products and services.  The over riding message of the Summit is that there is life in packaged entertainment, and the industry trade associations intend to help all those concerned learn how to maximize potential and profitability in the short to medium term.

“It makes sense for us to join forces on this event,” says Bryan Ekus, managing director of MTA, “as our memberships are entirely complementary and cover the entire spectrum of packaged media senior executives, from content owners and replicators through raw material and equipment manufacturers. Our joint message is that there is a future for packaged media, and we intend to bring together a number of key speakers from leading companies to show how that can be done, from improving manufacturing processes to identifying and marketing the right content for high definition media.”

A specially-formed advisory committee will help organize the program for the event. The committee will include members from each of the associations, as well as key people from the content, research and publication communities.<

“This Summit will address the key issues and concerns of the entire range of packaged entertainment executives,” says Charles Van Horn, president of CDSA. “The location in Hollywood is always a popular choice both with the studios and major replicators, and with their vendors across the board. The program will be designed to cover the major issues facing that segment of our membership involved  in the packaged media industry.”

“While this is certainly the first step towards helping each other and the industry find ways to work together and extend the life of packaged entertainment,” says Ekus, “the Associations will remain as separate entities, each bringing its own particular strengths to the core issue of extending the life of standard and high definition media.”

“The Summit responds to the requests from the physical media segment of our membership for a highly targeted program presented in a condensed two-day setting delivering high value content designed to maintain the strong appeal for packaged media,” says Van Horn. “We look forward to offering this opportunity to our respective memberships to network and work together in addressing the challenges and business opportunities available to today’s leading packaged media companies.”
